Aqua Vitae - Exhibition KickArts Cairns

The Umbrella Collective was pleased to be invited to do an exhibition wall at KickArts Contemporary Art Gallery in Cairns, Australia. The exhibition is called Aqua Vitae - The Water of Life. The Umbrella Collective members participating are Kylie Johnson (Paper Boat Press), Liana Kabel (Art, Design, Jewellery), Shannon Garson (Porcelain), Rebecca Ward (Jewellery) and myself.

Aqua Vitae is showing from 5th August until the 30th August 2008.

About Aqua Vitae: Aqua Vitae is Latin for the Water of Life. In the language of medieval alchemists it conveys the sense of a living being of substance as a directly contrast to the rigid immateriality of mind in the abstract. The vital water was the junction of spirit, soul and body and is an apt expression for how makers feel about their process, product and art as they mould, shape and cut their creations into being.

Water is one of most ubiquitous symbols present within the psyche of man - it is a powerful solvent, it brings opposites into unity, it represents the unconscious itself and is the fountain of all life. Here the water symbol unites the work of the five craft artist of the Umbrella Collective.

My 100 Water Houses, Ishmael's Whales and Rain Berries are included in this exhibition.

Toy Box Exhibition Images

Beverley from KickArts Contemporary Gallery sent me some images from the Toy Box exhibition Flying Star Toys was a part of in December 2007. I thought I'd share them here with you. In the top image you can see that they displayed my FlockA2s hanging downwards in a line - very imaginative! It looks like it was a fun exhibition and I was very happy to have been invited to participate :)

Now that it is over the KickArts shop (and online shop) is stocking Flying Star Toys.

Delightful Shows

The Umbrella Collective Christmas show was another successful and happy day. Saturday the 17th of November started for me driving into the city watching moody clouds pouring forth a grey column of rain but these visitors were quickly travelling across the skyline soon to pass. They toured across the sky all day so we enjoyed an atmosphere that hadn't been felt in Brisbane for sometime, a wonderful sub-tropical gloaming that brought a sense of magical expectation. Everyone was agreed that it was a prefect setting for the show.

Above you can see the Umbrella Collective members from left to right: Shannon Garson (porcelain), Kylie Johnson (Paper Boat Press), Liana Kabel (Plastic Girl Jewellery), me of course, Rebecca Ward (jewellery), with Sarah Bowe the sixth member of the Umbrella Collective who did not present work this year but was there to help taking the photo. The photo below shows the Flying Star Toys stand as seen at the Umbrella Collective show.

The GOMA show on Sunday the 25th was also an excellent day with a great turn out from the public and I got to meet up with some other of our fellow Queensland artists such as Sarah and Lee from Audrey and Rose, Luke Johnson from Robots Robots, Erin from Blossom Creations and new toy maker Kia Hing Fay. Her toys for children are beautifully made and I was pleased to be able to do a swap with her for one of the very popular show favourite Biscuit Bunnies. Below is a photo she sent me of him in his new home shown with one of Kylie Johnson's ceramic stars. I'm sure we'll be hearing more about Kia in the future.

Finally, I'd like to thank all of those people who came out to support us and those who sent there well wishes or very kind apologies, you are all truly Friends of Flying Star Toys :)

100 Water Houses in Threads of Change

I had such a fun day today - I had a photo shoot for an article about my work in the textile exhibition Threads of Change being staged at Reverse Garbage. Most of the shoot was spent in a rather awkward position on the floor amidst my soft sculptures called 100 Water Houses. The article will be published next week so I'll post it then...I hope it turns out well!

100 Water Houses was created especially for this exhibition and since the idea was to use recycled textiles I was excited by being able to call upon all the wonderful fabrics I've been collecting from thrift shops for the last couple of years. I must admit, at first I was a little stumped as to what I might make...however, while wondering I picked up one of my books on Hundertwasser and inspiration just flew up and hit me between the eyes..so to speak :) The painting above called Yellow Ships - Sea of Tunis and Taormina (1951) spoke to me and I went immediately into the studio and began the process of making tall, soft sculpture houses.

I named them 100 Water Houses in honour of Hundertwasser, whose name means 100 waters. Hundertwasser was an artist well known for his "green" ideas. The title also reflects the intimate connection between water and the home brought to focus during our sever drought that has brought about the necessity of installing water tanks(houses) to collect the rain.

Threads of Change opens Friday 20th July at 6pm and runs until Saturday 11th August at Reverse Garbage, 296 Montague Road, West End, Brisbane. If you're in the area, why not come along to the opening and say hi :)

Coastal Birds Under Glass

Ever since Lilli&Tom miniature had their year long tour of the Brisbane City Council libraries in 2006, I've had a great relationship with Sue the Sandgate librarian. Earlier this year we talked about another little project and I mentioned the Coastal Birds series I designed based on the collaboration with Brisbane artist/illustrator Rachel Arthur. Sue thought they would be a nifty display for the library too and booked me in for a display in April.

I installed them on Tuesday morning at the hideous hour of 8:30am. Anyone who knows me understands that I currently get up at around 10am and go to bed around 2am - these blogs don't write themselves you know ;). Sue pointed out that April also coincides with the annual Easter Bluewater festival here in Sandgate that kicks off this Good Friday with the start of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race, it brings in heaps of spectators to Sandgate and Shorncliffe to watch the starting line in Moreton Bay. So it seems that it will be a good theme for the season after all.

Some of my beloved regular readers might notice a new toy that I have yet to show you...it's a sneak peak at a new Flying Star Toy called Flocka2s. They aren't technically coastal birds and don't belong to that series (which might be a bit misleading), but they are native to the area and neatly filled the space I'm calling the "sky" in this display. Stay tuned for more on Sandgate Flocka2s soon!

Coastal Birds Series of artist made designer toys can be seen at Sandgate BCCL from now until the end of April.

And wishing a Happy Easter/Chocolate Egg season to all :D

Delightful Things for Christmas

It's nearly Christmas and Santa's elves are busy at work making all sort of wonderful gifts for you. As a toy maker this is an especially busy time as Santa invariably out-sources much of his elves' work.

But before Santa gets the pick of the bunch we've stashed away a few of our favourite goodies to present in a special Christmas show.

My fellow Queensland makers and I, have banded together to create The Umbrella Collective - Artists United by Craft and Friendship. You can keep up to date with all our latest work in one place!

And if you happen to be in Brisbane why not come to the show and solve all your gift dilemmas in one hit! But Shhhhhh....don't tell Santa ;)
